The purpose of this assignment was to find relationships between the letters (typographic forms). We have to look beyond letters and numbers and see these forms in their simplest form, a shape. To start, I chose a typeface with variation in line weight and written in one of my native languages. I narrowed down my final choice to Gujarati MT Regular.

This project as a whole is a metaphor between the language of Gujarati and the Gujarati people of Gujarat. Within just the state of Gujarat there are so many different types of people with their own dialects and subcultures, but at heart we are all Gujarati. Similarly, within the language there are a lot of repeating shapes and strokes throughout the different glyphs. To visualize this metaphor I pulled apart every single element of every glyph and reorganized the shapes in patterns that exemplify the similarities.

I created a hundred thumbnails and made digital scans of the ones that I felt had the most potential. Using those digital scans I reorganized the images until I was satisfied with the flow and rhythm of the individual squares.
